Bio
Vittoria Chierici is a renown, international painter, filmmaker and writer, from Bologna, Italy. She lives and works in New York and in Eastport Maine where she has her studio.
During the 1980s, she participated in important young artist groups whose works culminated in the show Examples of New Italian Art at Riverside Studios, London in 1989. In the same year, Vittoria Chierici was nominated to represent Italy at the Tokyo international exhibition, 7 Artists. In the late ‘90s, Chierici began to work on a new mixed media project on the historical subject of The Battle of Anghiari, based on a lost mural by Leonardo Da Vinci. A large painting of the same subject, Anghiari Verde, is also permanently exhibited at Humanities Initiative, New York University.
From 2000 to 2005, Chierici wrote articles about contemporary art and art history in many Italian magazines such as: Itinerari d’Impresa, Trenitalia, Roma; Equilibri, published by Il Mulino, Bologna, Italy. In 2009, she wrote an essay on the video artist, Burt Barr and his generation ( Trisha Brown, Jasper Johns etc..) for the Italian cultural magazine, Dialoghi Internazionali.
Since 2004, Chierici has begun a series of collaborations with American artists working in different art forms: choreographer Liz Gerring, composer Eve Beglarian. In 2010, Chierici participated in the project, No Soul for Sale, organized by the art gallery Lucie Fontaine at the Tate Modern Gallery in London. In 2011, Chierici commissioned violinist and composer, Ana Milosavljevic, the music for her last video project, Luci in the Sky, made by filmmaker Yuko Takebe. Paintings and video installations by Vittoria Chierici have been shown in galleries and museums in
Italy and abroad. In 2012, Chierici was invited to participate in the group show, Estate, organized by Lucie Fontaine at Marianne Boesky gallery, in New York.
In 2012, Vittoria Chierici realized the project, Sailing away to Paint the Sea, based on a trip on a cargo ship from Holland to Cleveland, Ohio. In 2015, she wrote a book about the all project, with the title: Sailing away to Paint the Sea, published by Kammeredizioni, Bologna, Italy. The book is in Italian and English.
Many of Vittoria Chierici works are in international museums and art venue: National Gallery in Rome, MART, museum of contemporary art of Rovereto and Trento; PAC, museum of Contemporary Art in Milano, museum Magazzino for the Italian Arts, New York, museum MAMbo and museum Morandi in Bologna, among others. Vittoria Chierici received her education in Art History at the University of Bologna, where she studied with Umberto Eco, Tomas Maldonado, Franco Donatoni and other Italian intellectuals who founded the new faculty, DAMS (Art, Music, and Performing Arts) and in New York, where, in the early 80’s, she continued her studies in Art History at the UC Berkeley and Columbia, focusing on the migration of European avant garde artists to the US. She also studied Fine Arts at the School of Visual Arts and filmmaking at the New York Film Academy.
In 2001, Chierici was awarded with Premio DAMS by the University of Bologna, for her achievements in the arts. Vittoria Chierici has been assistant professor at the Milano Politecnico, Faculty of Design, from 2003 to 2006.
Since 2009, Chierici’s work has been documented at the National Museum of Women in the Arts, In Washington DC. Vittoria Chierici is represented by gallery Rossi&Rossi based in Hong Kong who exhibited her work at Art Basel Hong Kong in 2021, at TEFAF art fair in Maastricht Holland in 2022 and at Arte Fiera Bologna in 2025.
Vittoria Chierici works like an architect, on many projects at the same time. Some projects can last years.

Vittoria Chierici è una pittrice, filmmaker e saggista di fama internazionale, originaria di Bologna. Vive e lavora a New York e a Eastport, nel Maine, dove ha il suo studio. Negli anni ’80 ha partecipato a importanti gruppi di giovani artisti, i cui lavori hanno culminato nella mostra “Examples of New Italian” ai Riverside Studios di Londra nel 1989. Nello stesso anno, Vittoria Chierici è stata scelta a rappresentare l’Italia alla mostra internazionale di Tokyo “7 Artists”. Alla fine degli anni 90, Chierici ha iniziato a lavorare a un nuovo progetto a tecnica mista sul tema storico della
Battaglia di Anghiari, basato su un affresco perduto di Leonardo da Vinci. Un grande dipinto dello stesso soggetto,”Anghiari Verde”, è esposto permanentemente presso la Humanities Initiative della New York University.
Dal 2000 al 2005, Chierici ha scritto articoli di arte contemporanea e storia dell’arte su numerose riviste italiane come: Itinerari d’Impresa, Trenitalia, Roma; Equilibri, pubblicato da il Mulino, Bologna. Nel 2009 ha scritto un saggio sul video artista Burt Barr e sulla sua generazione (Trisha Brown, Jasper Johns ecc.) per la rivista culturale italiana Dialoghi Internazionali.
Dal 2004, Chierici ha avviato una serie di collaborazioni con artisti americani impegnati in diverse forme dell’arte: la coreografa Liz Gerring e la compositrice Eve Beglarian. Nel 2010, Chierici ha partecipato al progetto No Soul for Sale, organizzato dalla galleria dell’arte Lucie Fontaine alla Tate Modern Gallery di Londra. Nel 2011, Chierici ha commissionato alla violinista e compositrice Ana Milosavljevic la musica per il suo ultimo progetto video, Luci in the Sky, realizzato dal regista Yuko Takebe. Dipinti e videoinstallazioni di Vittoria Chierici sono stati esposti in gallerie e musei in Italia e all’estero.
Nel 2012, Chierici è stata invitata a partecipare alla mostra collettiva Estate, organizzata da Lucie Fontaine presso la galleria Marianne Boesky di New York. Nel 2012, Vittoria Chierici ha realizzato il progetto Sailing away to Paint the Sea, basato su un viaggio su un cargo dall’Olanda a Cleveland, Ohio. Nel 2015, ha scritto un libro sull’intero
progetto, intitolato Sailing away to Paint the Sea, edito da Kammeredizioni, Bologna, Italia. Il libro è disponibile in italiano e inglese.
Molte opere di Vittoria Chierici si trovano in musei e spazi espositivi internazionali: la Galleria Nazionale di Roma, il MART, Museo dell’arte contemporanea di Rovereto e Trento; il PAC, Museo dell’arte contemporanea di Milano, il Museo Magazzino per le Arti Italiane di New York, il Museo MAMbo e il Museo Morandi di Bologna, la New York University, tra gli altri. Vittoria Chierici si è formata in Storia dell’Arte all’Università di Bologna, dove ha studiato con Umberto Eco, Tomas Maldonado, Franco Donatoni e altri intellettuali italiani che hanno fondato la nuova facoltà DAMS (Arte, Musica e Spettacolo), e a New York, dove, nei primi anni ’80, ha proseguito gli studi in Storia dell’Arte presso l’UC Berkeley e la Columbia University, concentrandosi sulla migrazione degli artisti dell’avanguardia europei negli Stati Uniti. Ha inoltre studiato Belle Arti alla School of Visual Arts e regia alla New York Film Academy. Nel 2001, l’Università di Bologna le ha conferito il Premio DAMS per i suoi meriti artistici.
Vittoria Chierici è stata ricercatrice presso la Facoltà del Design del Politecnico di Milano dal 2003 al 2006. Dal 2009, il lavoro di Chierici è documentato presso il National Museum of Women in the Arts di Washington DC.
Vittoria Chierici è rappresentata dalla galleria Rossi&Rossi di Hong Kong, che ha esposto le sue opere ad Art Basel Hong Kong nel 2021, alla fiera dell’arte TEFAF di Maastricht, Olanda, nel 2022 e ad Arte Fiera Bologna nel 2025.
